Channel playbook
How to market a SaaS product in Slack and Discord communities
Slack and Discord communities are where a specific professional audience asks each other for tool recommendations, which makes them high-intent and completely unforgiving of drive-by promotion. The prerequisite is being a recognised name before you ever link anything — in a small group, one promotional post from an unknown account is remembered. The play is answering questions in your area of expertise a few times a week and linking only when someone is describing the exact problem you solve.
The play for Slack and Discord communities
- Format
- Answer questions; link only when directly relevant
- Cadence
- A few touches per week
- Prerequisite
- Be a recognized name in the group before promoting anything
This is the same play Beacon uses when it builds a channel plan — not a summary written for this page.
When this is the wrong channel
This is the wrong channel if you need predictable volume: community goodwill does not scale and cannot be scheduled. It is also wrong if you are unwilling to help people who will never buy, which is most of the work.
How to start on Slack and Discord communities
In order. Each step is doable this week.
- 01
Find the two or three groups your buyer is actually in
Look for the community attached to a tool your buyer already uses, or a professional group for their job title. Ask a customer which group they are in — it is faster than searching and the answer is better.
- 02
Read the rules and find the promotion channel
Most groups have a designated #showcase or #self-promo channel and a rule against posting elsewhere. Respect it. The rule exists because the group has been burned before.
- 03
Answer questions for two weeks with no link
This is the prerequisite. In a group of a few hundred people, being recognised takes a couple of weeks of genuine help — and being recognised is what makes a later mention land as a recommendation.
- 04
Link only when someone describes your exact problem
"I built something for this, happy to explain if useful" inside a relevant thread converts far better than anything in the promo channel, and nobody objects to it.
- 05
Keep showing up after you get a customer
The founder who disappears after their first sale is noticed. Sustained presence in two groups beats a shallow presence in ten.
What fails
The specific ways this channel goes wrong.
Joining and immediately posting a link
Gets you removed, and in a small community it is remembered by the exact people you were trying to reach.
Only ever posting in #show-your-work
That channel is read almost exclusively by other people promoting things. The value is in the help channels.
DMing members after joining
Nearly always against the rules and reliably resented. If you would not do it in the open channel, do not do it in a DM.
Joining ten communities at once
Presence does not divide. Two groups where you are known beats ten where you are a name nobody recognises.
What working looks like
Someone else recommends your product in a thread you are not in. That is the outcome this channel produces, and it is worth more than anything you could post yourself.
Time cost
A few touches a week, 15 minutes each. Consistency matters more than volume here.
Slack and Discord communities: common questions
How do I find Slack or Discord communities for my niche?
Start with the community attached to a tool your buyer already uses, and with professional groups for their job title. The fastest route is to ask an existing customer or a prospect which group they are in — the answer is better than anything a directory gives you.
Can I promote my product in a Slack community?
In the designated channel, yes, and in help channels only when it directly answers what someone asked. Check the rules first — most groups have explicit ones, and enforcement is usually a removal rather than a warning.
How long before I can mention my product in a community?
Until you are recognised, which in a group of a few hundred is a couple of weeks of genuinely useful answers. The test is whether a regular would know your name, not how many days have passed.
