Channel playbook

How to launch a B2B SaaS product on Product Hunt

Product Hunt is one launch moment, not a channel, and its lasting value is a permanent, well-ranked page plus a set of assets you reuse everywhere — not the one-day traffic spike, which converts poorly because most of the audience is other builders. The prerequisite is roughly twenty people lined up to comment in the first hours, because early engagement decides whether the listing is seen at all. Have the demo video, the first comment, and the answer to "how is this different from X?" written before the day starts.

The play for Product Hunt

Format
Launch post + 60-second demo video + founder comment
Cadence
One launch moment
Prerequisite
A hunter and ~20 people lined up to comment in the first hour

This is the same play Beacon uses when it builds a channel plan — not a summary written for this page.

When this is the wrong channel

Product Hunt is the wrong move if your product is not usable by a stranger without a sales call, or if you have nobody at all to notify — a launch with no first-hour engagement is worse than no launch, because you only get the good slot once.

How to start on Product Hunt

In order. Each step is doable this week.

  1. 01

Line up twenty people who will comment, by name

This is the prerequisite and the whole ball game. Not "share my launch" — a specific list of people you have individually asked, who will write a real sentence in the first hours. Ranking is driven by early engagement.

  2. 02

Have a demo a stranger can watch in 60 seconds

The listing is scanned, not read. A short demo video does the explaining that your copy cannot. This is the one asset that carries over to every other channel afterwards.

  3. 03

Write the maker's first comment in advance

Why you built it, who it is for, what it does not do yet. Naming a limitation up front earns more credibility on Product Hunt than any feature list, and it pre-empts the sceptical reply.

  4. 04

Launch early in the day, Tuesday to Thursday

Product Hunt's day starts at 00:01 Pacific and ranking accumulates across it, so a late launch competes with a full day's head start. Avoid weekends, when traffic is thinner.

  5. 05

Answer every comment yourself, all day

Block the day. The comment thread is the product page for anyone deciding whether to try it, and an unanswered sceptical question sits there permanently.

What fails

The specific ways this channel goes wrong.

  • Asking for upvotes

Against the rules, detectable, and it can get a launch removed entirely. Ask for comments and honest feedback instead — which is also what actually helps ranking.

  • Launching with no audience at all

The listing needs early engagement to be seen. With nobody to notify, spend two weeks building a small list first — you cannot re-run the launch.

  • Treating the traffic spike as validation

Most Product Hunt visitors are builders looking at a new tool, not buyers with your problem. A thousand visits and two qualified signups is a normal, non-alarming outcome, and reading it as failure is a mistake.

  • Letting the page go stale after launch day

The listing keeps getting found for years. Keep the description accurate as the product changes; it is often the second result a buyer sees after your own site.

What working looks like

The durable outcomes are the permanent listing, the demo video, the objection list from the comments, and the email addresses of people who tried it. Judge the launch on those a month later, not on the rank.

Time cost

A week of preparation, then one entirely blocked day.

Product Hunt: common questions

Do I need a hunter to launch on Product Hunt?

No — makers can launch their own products, and self-launching is now normal. A well-followed hunter adds some initial distribution, but it matters far less than having people ready to comment in the first hours.

What day is best to launch on Product Hunt?

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, starting as close to 00:01 Pacific as you can manage. The ranking window is the Pacific day, so launching late in it means competing against a head start. Weekends have less traffic but also less competition, which is a reasonable trade if you have a small list.

How much traffic does a Product Hunt launch actually bring?

Enough to be worth doing and not enough to build on — and it is the wrong reason to launch. The durable value is a permanent, well-indexed page, the assets you made for it, and the objections you collected. Plan for the assets, not the spike.

Can I launch the same product on Product Hunt twice?

Yes, for a significant new version, but the second launch rarely performs like the first. Save it for a genuine change rather than burning it on a minor release.
